For professional pianists, forgetting notes or problems with the orchestra in cooperation on the stage is understandable but not acceptable. It’s not only about the skills but also about professionalism.
Recently, Korean medias reported that on a concert which was held in Seoul Arts Center on October 30th,
Li Yundi – a Chinese pianist – suddenly forgot what to play and the concert was forced to stop when he was playing the first movement of Sergei Tiempo. After the performance, Li blamed the conductor and the orchestra. Audience were
so angry that asked for refund. Later, Yundi’s agent explained that Li was suffered by tired journey and he neve blamed others, let alone the refund. Li also reposted this statement on Weibo and made an apology.
When the news was reported, it triggered heated discussion. There were more than 350,000 Chinese fans paid
attention to the new. Most of netizens agreed that Li was disgraceful in Korea. However, others expressed that it was reasonable for human beings make mistakes.
Llbum Chang, a well-known music critic said: there was an old Chinese saying: The horse
trips and falls on his knees. It came true on Li Yundi’s concert. His playing also reflected that if not being strict to practice, then you would fall behind.
There is another saying in Chinese: One flaw cannot obscure the splendor of the jade. At the age of 18, Li
became the youngest winner on International Chopin Piano Competition in history. He was also the first Chinese to win the prize. This year, the 33-year-old Li was the jury of the 17th International Chopin Piano
Competition, being the youngest jury in history as well.
During pass 15 years, Li has cooperated with many top orchestras and his concerts were always popular. Also, his
albums were warmly welcomed. Li’s success is a legend that cannot be copied. He is also the Prince Charming for many people.
Li was once a good example in Chinese heart. He has clean smile, Charming personality, excellent piano skill, and elegant performance. He even influenced the love for classic music of a Chinese generation. Being the winner of an international competition, Li’s ability was widely recognized. However, a genius also needs to practice, which is a long and continuous journey of learning.
In recent years, there were lots of gossips about Li, including his homo affair with Leehom Wang, which was once a hot topic. This year, Li appeared on the wedding of Huang Xiaoming and Angelababy, but was absent from International Chopin Piano Competition as a jury. For all these negative news, we wondered whether Li was still that genius before？
There was also news that Li kept 8-hour practice per day after he became famous. However, can he keep this habit now? This year, Li participated in The Chamber of Stars, which is a room-escape reality show on ZJTV. In the program, Li’s performance was quite different from people’s impression, which shocked the audience. “In the first recording of the room escape game, against the image of an elegant artist, Li laughed with grin bright teeth and danced ridiculously.”
Recently, again, Li was on the list of a variety game show on HNTV called Run for Time. Does he still have time to practice when joining so many reality shows? Why do a classic professional artist want to change to be a pop star? How to balance commercial value and artistic value?
In ancient China, there were stories of “Achievement is founded on diligence and wasted upon recklessness”. The wonderful performance on the stage is closely related to hardworking. For professional pianists, forgetting notes or problems with the orchestra in cooperation is understandable but not acceptable. It’s not only about the skills but also about professionalism.
Profession is serious. On the playground athletes not only need professional skills but strong mental status for competition. As a word-class pianist, Li should rethink about his problems in the performance. Is it because of tired journey or his mind is no longer pure?
If Li did not reflect but still be an entertainment attitude, it might ruin his piano career. No progress simply means regression. But since Tian Liang, an Olympic champion, becomes successful in entertainment industry after retirement, Li might also be popular if he enters the entertainment business. Who knows?
