Summer may be over (at least for most of us), but that doesn’t mean that the music has to stop. There are still plenty of festivals taking place all across the country, and some of them are even cooler than those during the summer months that grab all the headlines. If you haven’t gotten your fill of music festivals for the year, here are a few that can help you accept that the season is coming to a close.
Dates: September 5-7
Location: Seattle, WA
Tickets: $65 – $750
Headliners: Ellie Goulding, The Weeknd, Zedd
Despite having the aforementioned big names on the bill, the majority of the acts on the bill at Bumbershoot are lesser-known to the mainstream, but that doesn’t mean there’s a lack of people who are interested. Seattle has long been known as a city of emerging and underground talent, and the lineup of this 45 year old festival reflects that. Yes, that’s right, this event is older than most of the people attending it. That’s not something every festival can offer.
Dates: September 10-13
Location: Arrington, VA
Tickets: $200 – $285
Headliners: The Doobie Brothers, Robert Plant, Phil Lesh, Carlos Santana
Unlike almost every other music festival on the market, Lockn’ is purposefully aimed at those of a certain age. While of course any music fan is encouraged to attend, those headlining the show have been in the music world for decades, and their fans are usually much older than, say, someone who would attend an EDM festival. In fact, one of the acts is celebrating 50 years of Jefferson Airplane. Having said that, it would be hard to find a lineup with more rockstars and legends, so Lockn’ is a pretty safe bet…if that’s what you’re into.
Dates: September 11-13
Location: Chicago, IL
Tickets: $130 – $300
Headliners: No Doubt, Modest Mouse, Iggy Pop, System of a Down
Those looking for popstars (ok, minus No Doubt, sort of) should not look to RiotFest for their end-of-summer festival fix. The event, which also takes place on different weekends in Denver and Toronto, is all about punk, reggae, and everything that rocks. Still independent (a lot of the other major festivals have been bought up by massive companies), RiotFest has a rare spirit you don’t get with some other events…and a kickass lineup.
Dates: September 15-20
Location: Nashville, TN
Headliners: Loretta Lynn, Jewel, Steve Earle,
Not only is this event a pretty sweet deal (yes, it’s only $60), but what you get for that price is ridiculous. AmericanaFesttakes place all over Nashville, with half a dozen venues playing host to what looks like hundreds of acts, all of which touch on the Americana style. Just as you might bounce from stage to stage at a typical music festival, this option lets you see all that Nashville’s incredible music scene has to offer, and for a fraction of the price someone might pay to get into one of the more famous festivals.
