On November 17th, Songtradr, a B2B music licensing company based in Los Angeles, acquired Cuesongs, a British sync-licensing company. Cuesongs represents more than over 20,000 tracks from 150 indie labels and music publishers in the UK and Europe. This is the first acquisition after Songtradr completed its US$30 million Series C financing round.
Recently, the mobile app Voisey was acquired by Snapchat’s parent company Snap Inc with undisclosed terms and conditions. Voisey allows users to record short videos with their own voice using vocal effects and backup tracks. The maximum length of the videos is 1 minute. The videos can be shared on social media platforms and messaging applications.
New York-based independent music company Reservoir and the film and television soundtrack production company Atlantic Screen Music have announced the plan to establish a new joint venture together. The two companies will jointly invest in a series of film soundtrack projects. At the beginning of this month, Atlantic Screen Music just raised 10 million pounds (US$13.2 million) through its foundation to invest in global content IP.
On November 18th, Midi and East Sea announced that they will be jointly promoting the Nanxi River Midi X East Sea Countdown Music Festival (楠溪江迷笛 x 东海跨年音乐节) from December 31st, 2020 to January 2nd, 2021 in Zhejiang Province, Nanxi River Beach Music Park, Youngjia County, Wenzhou. The lineup and ticket information will be announced soon.
On November 20th, the lineup for the New Year’s Eve MDSK Music Festival was officially announced. It will be held in Suzhou Huolidao on December 31st with Young Jack (满舒克), BooM(黄旭), Wang Yitai (王以太), Vinida(万妮达) leading the performance.
The new hip hop label W8VES jointly created by Bilibili and 88rising started a national tour on November 19th. The tour will cover 14 cities including Changsha, Shenzhen, Kunming, Chengdu, Chongqing, Jinan, Beijing, Wuhan, Tianjin, Xi’an, Hangzhou, Nanjing, Wuxi, and Shanghai.
In the evening of November 21st, the Fourth Nanping Tourism Industry Development Conference China National Opera House Symphony Concert was held in Nanping Grand Theater. This concert is organized by the Nanping Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China and Nanping People’s Government and the Nanping Municipal Bureau of Culture and Tourism. The lineup includes 70 outstanding artists such as singer Li Jingjing (李晶晶), Sun Xueman (孙雪曼), Han Junyu(韩钧宇), Yu Jingren(於敬人), and Jiang Shuai(蒋帅).

On November 21st, Shanghai-based band YADAE (鸭打鹅乐队) formally signed with Modern Sky. Formally called Duck Fight Goose, the band announced it’s new official English name “YADAE” at the same time. The band formed in 2009 and now has two members, Han Han and 33. In their first EP Flow released in 2010, YADAE showcased a unique style that blended synthesizer electronic sounds which distinguishes them from traditional rock bands, making them well respected in the indie music scene in China.
On November 20th, CJ ENM announced that Wanna One will not perform at the 2020 MAMA Awards. “Even though we discussed with each of the Wanna One members’ agency, we finally decided not to proceed with the performance,” says the company.
Australian-British singer Kylie Minogue’s new album DISCO officially topped the British album chart last week. The album sold entered the official British album chart last week, topping the list. The new album sold 55,000 copies in the first week, setting the highest sales record for all British singers in the first week in 2020. Kylie Minogue signed with BMG in February 2017, she produced three Top #1 albums since then.

The rights owner of “The Song of Peony(《牡丹之歌》)” sued comedian Yue Yunpeng (岳云鹏) and related companies for the infringement of lyrics rights. The court decided that the lyrics of Yue’s famous “The Song of Fifth Ring(《五环之歌》)” have no similarities in theme and form of expression with the original song so there is no infringement of copyright. The plaintiff’s request was rejected.
Taylor Swift herself has confirmed that Scooter Braun’s Ithaca Holdings sold the masters right of her first six albums to Shamrock Holdings for a little less than US$300 million.

Universal Music Group (UMPG) and Berlin-based Electric Feel Entertainment signed an exclusive global publishing agreement. The two companies will launch Electric Feel Publishing Europe to further explore opportunities in the European market. Sony/ATV has recently acquired a catalog of popular country songs from River House Artists, including Luke Combs’s hit singles “Forever After All”, “Beautiful Crazy”, “When It Rains It Pours” and “Lovin’ On You”. The company also signed a joint venture agreement with River House Artists to provide creative services to its talents. Launched in 2016 by senior industry veteran Lynn Oliver-Cline, River House Artists is an independent record company and distribution company dedicated to the development of emerging musicians and songwriters.
Recently, Round Hill announced that it raised a total of US$291 million dollars. Round Hill said that more than 200 million US dollars have already been used to acquire catalogs of famous musicians including Bruno Mars and Craig David.
