Jackson Wang released the first album since his debut six years ago, a solo album titled MIRRORS, on September 26th. It sold 200,000 copies in 12 minutes.
The lead single of this album, “BULLET TO THE HEART,” rose to NO.1on multiple NetEase Cloud Music’s popularity list, the new song list, the Nebula popularity list the next day. It was played more than a million times on Tik Tok. The song also did well outside of China. On September 24th, it ranked 15th on iTunes’ global list, far better than his previous singles Papillon and OKAY, which was ranked 60th and 55th on the first day, respectively.
As of 14:00 on October 2nd, the digital album sold about 437,000 copies at 15 yuan per copy, which generates a total revenue of about 6.55 million yuan.
The numbers did not meet the expectations of fans. They felt the sales number is not worth Jackson’s whole-hearted effort in producing this album.
Jackson debuted in Korea as a member of JYP’s boy group GOT7. In the ultra-competitive Kpop world, his humor won him many fans. In 2014, Lu Han started the trend of Chinese Kpop idols’ return to China. Jackson was late to return, so he didn’t receive as much social media attention as the previous ones. He put his music career on hold and participated in many variety shows to accumulate a fan base in China. Since the broadcast of Go Fridge Season 1, Jackson became well-known in China as a funny variety show celebrity. Despite his success, Jackson lamented to the press that he ignored his “real job” as a singer for too long, and he longs to get back into it.
In July 2017, he started his own company Team Wang Studio and began focusing his effort on music. He soon released singles “Papillon,” “OKAY,” and “Different Game” featuring Rapper Gucci Mane. These songs, in turn, got him into many idol survival variety shows as mentors. On March 23rd, Jackson held his first solo concert of 2000 people.
Comparing to the top-tier idols in mainland China such as Lu Han, Lay Zhang, Kris Wu, Z.Tao, and Cai Xukun, neither his album sales number nor fans on Weibo is impressive. However, his Instagram, Twitter, and Youtube accounts are flourishing. He’s also very popular among Chinese students who are studying abroad in Western countries because of the quality of his music.
Superstardom in mainland China seems easy to get but harder to keep. Newer and younger stars quickly rise and then forgotten. As an entertainment industry veteran, Jackson must be well aware of that. Fans have been speculating whether he would renew his contract with JYP when it ends. But there’s no doubt he will continue to be a force in the mainland Chinese music and entertainment scene with his quality music, humor, and modesty.
