According to South Korea’s news report on October 4, boy group survival reality show, Produce X 101, had pre-selected the debut class before the broadcast and fabricated the votes accordingly. The tripartite contract between contestants, their agencies, and CJ Entertainment, the production company of the show, unfairly protects CJ’s interests. The compensation for the trainee is 100,000 won per episode if they stay for the entire show. If a trainee gets eliminated midway, his pay would be even less. The distribution of income is also unfavorable to the contestants’ agencies. For each song released, the members’ agencies get 1 million won, and the rest of the proceeds would all go to CJ Entertainment regardless of how much income the song generates. An entertainment industry insider said that because of the unfair clauses in the contract, some agencies have requested to get their trainees eliminated at the last minute.
The police have launched an investigation into the variety show. The police have called the Produce X 101 production team in for questioning and plan to question the production team of the previous seasons of Produce 1o1 and Idol School.
