TME just reached a strategic partnership agreement with Modern Sky, the largest independent record label in China in the areas of copyright, offline event and market development. This agreement is expected to add to TME’s content offerings.
Modern Sky is the most well-known independent record label in China with a 20-year history and owns the copyrights of a large catalog of music.
Modern Sky has been through a lot. In 2018, after a series of up and downs related to the hip hop industry in China, Modern Sky slowed down their expansion and started focusing on infrastructures by building the best-equipped recording studio in Beijing and creating a joint venture specialized in world music with Star Sing Music (Xing Wai Xing).
From independent record label to a national music festival tour – Strawberry Music Festival 2018 promoter; concert promoter to live streaming platform, Modern Sky has taken on many roles. They even created fashion houses, sportswear lines, media companies and built the Modern Sky Hotel.
For the past 6 years, Modern Sky’s official WeChat account almost announced new albums, new singles and live concerts everyday. Indie music started receiving mainstream attention after <Dong Xiao Jie> by Song Dongye and <Wo Zai Ren Min Guang Chang Chi Zha Ji> by A-Si went viral. In 2015, Ma You Ye, an independent folk song label signed with Modern Sky. In the following year, Edison Chen signed with Modern Sky. In 2017, Modern Sky signed Vinida, Tizzy T, Man Shuke and other popular artists.
Modern Sky also spent millions of RMB building up a top-notch recording studio in Beijing with the latest recording technology, including the only AMS NEVE 88RS console in China.
During an interview, the CEO of Modern Sky, Shen Lihui said, “We have to slow down.”
As a Chinese independent label with over 20 years of history, Modern Sky had some very difficult times. They held out and continued making records during the worst years of physical record sales. Their firm belief in the future of Chinese indie music made them who they are now.
While other record labels like Taihe Music accumulates stakes in every market they can possibly enter and chased every industry hype they can possibly chase, Modern Sky stands by their territory of independent music and has publicly announced its lack of interest in mainstream music and idol group business.
As internet availability increase, live streaming platform develop and young music lovers grow up, competent independent musicians will continue to emerge, consumer’s taste will continue to diversify, and independent music will continue to prosper.
