A notice released by Weibo Admin at 21:31 said that:”On January 27th, Beijing Cyber Administration Office reports Weibo’s problem in its contents’ management.  Weibo fully acknowledges the problem and will set the attitude straight and solve all potential problems focused on hot search board, hot topic board, Weibo Q&A, popular weibo celebrities and relationship section. These sections will be offline for a week and facing an entire makeover.” According to Weibo, these sections will remain offline till 9 pm, February 3rd.

Today, Cyberspace Administration of China leads Beijing Cyber Administration to examine Sina Weibo. The examination originated by the administration mainly focused on the insufficient censorship on Weibo’s users’ contents and continuing advocation of contents with wrong political direction, sexual content, discrimination and illegal information. The individual, who’s responsible, has been summoned and ordered to fix the situation.

Opening Sina Weibo, The section “Hot Search Board” has been emptied. This sudden change has evoked the Weibo’s community. “With the hot search board being gone, how can the celebrities fake data?” “What am I supposed to read with the hot search being gone.”

As a matter of fact, prior to Sina Weibo, Cyberspace Administration of China has already performed overall reform on platforms like Toutiao and IFeng News on December 29th.

If pushed back in time to May 2016, Beijing Cyber Administration Office has summoned responsible individuals from Sina, NetEase, IFeng, and Tencent about illegally provide news service during online streaming and has demanded those platforms to cease the illegal action and proceed to reformation.

During April 2017, Beijing Cyber Administration, teamed up with Beijing Municipal Public Security Bureau and Beijing Cultural Law Enforcement Agency, examined sexually related contents on Toutiao, Huoshan Live and Huajiao Live and demanded reformation.

March 2017, Beijing Cyber Administration Office criticized the action of inappropriate misappropriation in internet news service among the platforms like Tencent, Sina, Souhu, NetEease, and IFeng. Later, because of the illegal activities when reporting National People’s Congress, the office demanded IFeng Finance and Feng Live to cease updating and start to reform.

January 2018, Beijing Cyber Administration Office summoned Toutiao to criticize its illegal and inappropriate actions in internet news service and demanded reformation.

Apparently, the reformation of news media and social media will only become stronger from now on. Beijing Administration Office claimed that they will lawfully enforce and censor contents even stronger, rectify internet information service, maintain the order of online information communication. Citizens are also welcomed to report any unlawful and inappropriate activities.
