March 16, 2018 (GMT+8), Alibaba Music announced that it signed the agreement of strategic collaboration with Merlin Network, the biggest digital publishing agency for independent music in the world, and the representative of many independent labels, and the digital publishing agency of many globally well-known digital music service providers such as SoundCloud, YouTube Red, Spotify, Pandora, Google Play, and KKBOX. The agreement is formed due to Alibaba Music’s long-term collaboration with many internationally well-known companies such as BMG、S.M, which shows its rich experience in international business and thoughtful insight in the music industry. On the other hand, the urge of developing independent music market from both companies prompts the process of the collaboration.
After signing the agreement of collaboration, Alibaba Music will receive database with millions of song from Merlin on top of its already well-developed database of 18 million songs, which will definitely accelerate the process of Alibaba Music’s global business plan in the field of independent music. On the other hand, Alibaba Music will use its network and resources to help Merlin expand its business into the Chinese music market, connect high quality international independent music and artists through its own label Xiami Music, increase the influence of Merlin in the independent music market, and make the whole independent music industry more influential in the mainstream scene.
In the future, Alibaba Music and Merlin will have further collaboration in terms of publishing operation and content promotion of independent music. They will both put more effort into preventing unjust and unequal behaviors in the music industry to protect the rights and respect of independent artists and providing a safe environment with better services for all independent artists and their fans.
